ARTIST: DAVID BANGURA
This stunning vintage sculpture is hand-carved from a single piece of SERPENTINE by 1st Generation SHONA artist, DAVID BANGURA.
Born on the 1st July 1955 into the Shava Nematombo, totem of the Korekore Tribe.
Following the death of his parents, he lived with his brother, helping to tend his cattle. After a time he joined the Mukaera Church in Guruve where he learned the art of basketry and tin making. In 1985 he met Henry Munyaradzi who encouraged him to explore sculpting. In 1990 he moved to the Tengenenge Art Community where he became a full time artist. Sculpting became a lucrative way of living for him and residing and working at the art centre suited his needs.
In 1978 he married Esther Gatsi and they were blessed with three sons and five daughters. He married his second wife, Violet in 1995. Esther died in 1998.
Forming part of the personal collection of Tom Blomfield, founder of the Tengenenge Art Centre, this piece is now being offered for sale since his death in April 2020.
