ARTIST: TENDAI GWARAVAZA
Sculpted from BLACK SERPENTINE by 3rd Generation SHONA artist, TENDAI GWARAVAZA.
TENDAI was born in 1981 in Wedza, Zimbabwe. The first born of seven children. He grew up in an inspiring environment, his father being a sculptor and neighbouring uncles who were wood carvers. They used their skills to make drums and the Mbira - thumb piano. His brother Timothy was also a sculptor.
His first inspirations for his abstract sculptures came from the sea, with its fluid form and the creatures within. That influence is still evident today.
His art expresses the beliefs of the SHONA people and he is highly respected at the Chitungwiza Art Centre, where he is based.
A stunning creation of a Kudu, and animal indeginous to Africa.
Beautifully detailed. Unfortunately because of the colour of this peice, it has been difficult to photograph its beautiful features properly but I have done my best to convey its contours.
A lovely impact sculpture that would enhance any home or garden setting.
