This beautiful little sculpture is hand-carved from a single piece of BUTTERJADE by 3rd Generation SHONA artist, FARAI MANGENDA.
Farai started to sculpt in 1994.
He sculpts heads and figures.
He likes to work with hard stones such as Verdite, Springstone and Fruit Serpentines.
He currently works at the Chitungwiza Art Centre.
He has eight children.

Butter Jade, also known as African Jade, is an ancient stone found in the greenstone belt of Southern Africa. This stone is typically around 50 million years old. It is a creamy, green/yellow semi-precious stone. Inclusions are characteristic of the unique charm of all semi-precious stones. The black markings are fossilised algae.
