This lovely little vintage sculpture is hand-carved from a single piece of BROWN SERPENTINE by 3rd Generation SHONA artist, ROBERT MURENGWA.
Robert was born 25th December 1973 near Guruve. His totem is the Tembo Mazvimbakupa and he belongs to the Korekore Tribe. Having spent some of his time in Harare, he eventually moved back home and in 2000, he moved to the Tenenenge Art Community to work as an assistant to Bernard Matemera.
His first sculpture was of a Baboon, which he saw whilst out hunting one day as a child. Later, he started to sculpt human figures and went on to carve elephants, monkeys, goats and the female form.
He has exhibited at the Ramambo Art Gallery and the National Art Gallery in Harare. Since 2011, he has worked a s part of the management team at Tenenege, having worked his way through the ranks of security guard and salesman there.
Robert is married and has one daughter.
Beautifully detailed and lovely colour throughout.
