Shona sculpture is an art form passed down through generations. It carries with it the heritage and stories of the Zimbabwean people, where the secrets of the craft are transmitted from one generation to the next, safeguarding ancestral knowledge and techniques that have been refined over centuries.
Springstone is an exceptionally hard rock with a high iron content and no cleavages. It is extremely dense which allows the sculpture to be polished to a high shine. Although there are several mines containing this stone, the majority is mined in the north of Zimbabwe, in an area called Guruve.
