    ARTIST: ITAI MANGENDA

This beautiful bust of an African woman is sculpted from Red Granite by 3rd Generation SHONA artist, ITAI MANGENDA.

Itai was born in 1999 and spent his formative years in Nyanga, Zimbabwe. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in the art of stone carving, he was surrounded by artistic influences from a young age. Itai's father, Sekesayi, is a skilled sculptor renowned for his exquisite bust carvings; he played a pivotal role in sparking Itai's passion for the craft. Additionally, Itai is fortunate to have several uncles who are also esteemed

stone carvers, further emersing him in the rich tradition of Shona sculpture.

Although Itai has not exhibited his work publicly, he continues to work towards participating in future exhibitions and international workshops. Eager to showcase his creations to a wider audience, he is seeking opportunities to share his artistic talent and artistic vision with the world.

Beyond his artistic endeavours, Itai is actively involved in church and devotes considerable time to the praise and worship team. This balance between artistic expression and devotion to spirit serves as a wellspring of inspiration and motivation for Itai's creative journey.

The Mayans believed red granite to be a stone of protection with magical and sacred qualities. It is also alleged to symbolise abundance and growth.

Red granite is much rarer than the green, gold and tan varieties, thus making it a more expensive commodity.

Shona sculpture is an art form passed down through generations. It carries with it the heritage and stories of the Zimbabwean people, where the secrets of the craft are transmitted from one generation to the next, safeguarding ancestral knowledge and techniques that have been refined over centuries.
